2010 Oregon Transportation Safety Conference

Save the Date!

The 2010 Oregon Transportation Safety Conference will be October 12 – 14 at the Salem Conference Center.  This year the ODOT 2010 Grantee Workshop will be on Monday, October 11th. The conference will begin Tuesday, October 12th at 9:00 a.m.

We look forward to opening the 2010 Oregon Transportation Safety Conference with this year’s keynote speaker, Gordon Graham, Graham Research Consultants. As we enter the 21st century, the public sector is being analyzed like never before.  Customer service has always been important, but now the survival of any public sector organization is dependant on maximizing this concept on each and every contact. Gordon will discuss the “Who, What, Why, When, Where, How and How Often” of this important topic.

Gordon will also be presenting two workshops. The first is titled, “Ethical Decision Making”. Many people have never been taught how to make a decision and what needs to be considered in the process. Gordon will share his ten-step process and rules for improving decision making and demonstrate a technique to make better, ethical decisions.

Gordon will also present a workshop titled, “The Top Ten Things that get Cops in Trouble”.  This title speaks for itself. The program will identify the top ten things that get department personnel in trouble.

Interested in presenting or want to recommend a topic or a presenter? Email your ideas to safety@actsoregon.org or call 800-772-1315, 503-643-5620.

2009 Oregon Transportation Safety Conference Highlights

The 2009 Oregon Transportation Safety Conference held October
27 to 29 at the Best Western Hood River Inn was a great success.

Kim Curley from Commute Options in Bend (pictured right) welcomed
us at the Opening Luncheon.

The ACTS Oregon Annual Meeting and Conference Reception
was a great opportunity for networking. Lots of fun was had by
all who attended.

Jeffrey W. Runge, MD, FACEP (pictured right) former NHTSA Administrator
(2001-2005) and lifelong injury prevention researcher and physician,
presented the National Traffic Safety Perspective. He was joined by
Dr. Ritu Sahni, Oregon EMS Medical Director, to present Post-Crash
Car Injury Care and Disaster Preparedness.

Legislative Forum

The Legislative Forum was also held on Wednesday. We appreciated the participation of five legislators sharing thier perspectives on the transportation legislation passed in the 2009 Legislative session.

Tours

The tour of the Historic Columbia Gorge Highway and Bridges
was a great success, providing people with an understanding
of the history and future of this beautiful roadway.

The tour of the Cascade Locks Port of Entry was also very
educational although the cooler weather kept many people
at the conference center.

Intensive Training Opportunities

All of the Intensive Training Opportunities were well received.  Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Refresher Training, Introduction to AASHTO Highway Safety Manual for engineers; Airbags: History, Science, Mechanics and Effects on People and CPS 101: Concept, Design, Manufacture, Testing, Costs and Marketing.  The deployment of air bags was an added bonus provided by Mike James, Alabama Statewide CPS Coordinator.  Attendees earned DPSST Training Credits, Professional Development Hours, and Continuing Education Credits.

Workshops

Nine workshops were offered including Lindsey Selser sharing Help Your Community See “Eye to Eye” on Traffic Safety, Bob Reichenberg presenting Motorcycle Safety – A View from the Saddle, Dr. John Tongue and John Diehl focusing on Speed Task Force – Addressing the Issue, and Bill Warner sharing Driver Education: A Matter of Priority for the Future NOW.

Meals

The Awards Luncheon on Wednesday featured the winners of the Looking Beyond the Traffic Ticket Awards and the Oregon Transportation Safety Awards.  It was a great opportunity to hear about the winning efforts of traffic safety advocates statewide and show them our appreciation.
